Karl Fitzgerald hosts the monthly Renegade Economists, addressing the topic of monopolisation – primarily of landlords, bankers and licensed monopolies. The show chronicles the dangers of monopoly capitalism – a risky trend encouraged by government policy in the hands of lobbyocracy.

Why Comparative Advantage was replaced by Rent Extraction – with Prof Michael Hudson by Renegadeeconomists on Mixcloud

Particular emphasis is placed on land – the “mother of all monopolies” (Winston Churchill). Sharing the natural bounty of the land is the missing jigsaw piece in this so-called economic democracy. Other forms of monopoly, such as the EMS, cyber squatting and gene patenting are vital to genuine freedom too.

Read the detail on this in Karl’s key report the Total Resource Rents of Australia, quantifying the incredible worth of the earth (and natural monopolies). Neo-classicals dismiss economic rents at 1% of GDP. This report finds the free lunch at 23.6% of GDP.

Karl’s other major piece of work was the documentary Real Estate 4 Ransom, selected in The Top 100 documentaries to change the world.

The Renegade Economists radio show has been running since September 4th, 2007 on Melbourne’s 3CR radio. It is probably the world’s only radio show focusing on the value of the earth and the resultant scarcity rents. Our colleague Fred Harrison began the Renegade Economist youtube channel in August 2008 (that soon became www.renegadeeconomist.com). Ross Ashcroft has since assumed that role.

The show aims to ensure economics is understood as the essential science – never dismal!
